5 Tips to make shopping easier and less overwhelming if you are in your 50’s and 60’s. (Copy)
Why it can be hard to buy clothes for women in their 50s and 60s.
As we are sifting through the stores, we see items that look too young, too old, too workish, too expensive and too cheap. It’s hard to shop in the stores today, especially when there are few appropriate places for us. Please do not give up!
Here are 5 tips to help make the process easier AND I highly recommend shopping in person.
Prioritize fit over size. Every manufacturer sizes differently so take two different sizes into the fitting room and do not focus on the number on the label.
Tailoring makes a huge difference; nip in a dress at the waist, shorten jacket sleeves, or take in trousers for a cleaner silhouette and always try on shoes when tailoring pants and jeans. Well-fitting pieces look polished and feel more comfortable.
Build a versatile capsule wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe is about having the right amount of pieces in your wardrobe to create great mix and match outfits.
Invest in classic, high-quality staples you’ll wear often: great quality tshirts, a well-cut blazer, great fitting black pants, dark denim, fun sneakers, and a structured coat. Neutral colors (navy, black, camel, cream, white, ) mix easily; add a few of your best color accents for variety and fun. For me, It’s always red! it goes with everything and I feel great when I’m wearing it.
Choose fabrics that flatter and feel good
Look for good quality fabrics that drape rather than cling: cotton, silk, wool, cashmere blends, and modal. Avoid thin, clingy synthetics that highlight areas you’d rather minimize but take into consideration if you’re layering it with a sweater or jacket or wearing it by itself.
Embrace proportion and balance
Pair fitted pieces with looser ones to maintain proportion (e.g., slim trousers with a slightly relaxed blouse, or a streamlined tee under a boxy jacket). If wearing volume on top, keep bottoms tailored; if bottoms are fuller, choose a more fitted top.
Update accessories for a more elevated finish.
A few thoughtful accessories—a structured handbag or a large hobo bag, a pair of comfortable heels, chic flats trendy sneakers, a scarf, or simple jewelry—can refresh outfits instantly. and for those that never change their earring posts, try something newer as with Tory Burch earrings. they are chic,, well priced and not too far outside your comfort zone.
If you would like, I can suggest specific capsule wardrobe items, brands that I love, color palettes for your skin tone, or tailoring tips based on your body shape. I am always here to help make dressing and shopping easier and less overwhelming!
Remember, everyday is NOT a fashion show but you van feel great wearing the right wardrobe pieces.
